Over 300 Racers "Raced It, Experienced It!" at the 2nd Annual K&N
Spring Fling 20's presented by Sparco

When the gates opened up on Thursday morning before the K&N Spring
Fling Bracket Race presented by Sparco on the weekend of May 19-22,
promoters Peter Biondo and Kyle Seipel had well-founded concerns.
However, by noon time on that first day, their concerns were all for
naught as over 300 of the best bracket racers in the country trekked
their way to Bristol Dragway to enjoy the great weather and the
1,000’ compromise. To appease both factions of racers who run both
quarter- and eighth-mile, all weekend races were run to 1,000 feet.
“We had some apprehensions,” Seipel said, “but to see this many
racers from all over the country including Canada come through the
gates just proved all the work we did to make this one of the best
events in the country was all worth it. We had racers from 23 states
and Canada. That was impressive. We were even surprised to see how
many door cars showed up and we kept them separate for three rounds
of eliminations.”
Thursday’s RaceTech Race Cars warm-up race had $12,500 as the top
prize and Roy St. Dennis tried valiantly to keep his ’87 T-Bird door
car in the show but a .001 reaction time in the final by the night’s
winner Wyatt Colbert did in St. Dennis. Colbert, from
Mechanicsville, Virginia finished off his night with a .003 over his
dial for the holeshot win.
Friday’s DRE $20K to win feature had a great storyline behind it as
two racers who have run together since their Jr. Dragster days and
still travel together squared off in the final. Kevin Brannon from
Boiling Springs, South Carolina and Shane Maddox from Piedmont,
South Carolina are the best of friends despite Maddox red lighting
in the final to hand his best friend a cool 20 g’s.
Another great storyline unfolded in Saturday’s JEGS feature when
Johnny Labbous Sr. had to face his own nemesis, his son John Labbous
Jr. in the final. At last year’s K&N Spring Fling, Junior took home
over $50 grand, winning three nights in a row. This year, Junior was
pulling for his father to win, but not enough to just give it to
him. Only three thousandths of a second separated them off the line,
but Senior took a little too much win stripe to hand Junior another
K&N Spring Fling trophy.
Biondo and Seipel’s decision to keep the door cars separated for the
first three rounds was met with overwhelming enthusiasm as over 64
door cars participated all weekend. In Sunday’s JEGS feature final,
Derek Denney was trying to win one for the door cars. However, JP
Hickman from Bradenton, Florida wasn’t going to just sit back and
let Denney take it. An eighteen thousands reaction time advantage
was all Hickman needed to seal the deal and bring $20K back to the
Sunshine State with him.
A Door Car Shootout sponsored by McCarty Auto Parts was also held
for the first 32 drivers to enter. As if he hasn’t won enough here
already, (and we’re sure he doesn’t think so), John Labbous Jr.
pulled off the win driving Brandon Jarrell’s S-10 pick-up truck. In
the final, he squared off with another junior, this time Jeg
Coughlin in his Chevy II wagon. Double “0” reaction times were all
about as both drivers ran under their dial-ins the same amount but
Labbous’ two thousandths reaction time advantage was the key to his
$5,000 victory.
As they were last year, Masters Entertainment was on hand to film
the event for its own Fox Sports television show on June 8th and the
15th. Check your local listings. Biondo and Seipel also announced a
two year extension with Bristol Dragway to run the K&N Spring Fling
in 2012.

Labbous, Jr. Dominates in Three Straight, Houston Wins Day 4

like unbelievable and awesome were rendered insufficient by an
indescribable hat trick at the Inaugural K&N Spring Fling 20's
presented by Sparco. Second generation driver, John Labbous,
Jr., of White House, Tenn., son of renowned "Loose Caboose" legend,
Johnny Labbous, Sr., firmly established himself on the national
stage last year by bagging the $50,000 Super Pro World Challenge at
Mid-Michigan, but even that win may go down as a mere footnote
compared to his historic run at Bristol Dragway. Labbous began
his reign of terror during Thursday's $12,500-to-win
RacerSavings.com "Pre-Game Warmup". Labbous came out on top,
topping veteran bracketeer George Rupert and his Camaro in a
no-split final.
While each racer quickly adapted to the "1000' Compromise" format,
Labbous mastered the domain like no one else. On Day 2, the
first of the $20,000-to-win races, presented by DRE Engine Diapers,
Labbous was again in the hunt, along with semifinal competitors,
former Bracket Finals Champion Tommy Plott, former Quick Rod World
Champion Mike Fuqua, and IHRA Summit World Champion Chad Hedgecock.
Plott stopped the last remaining door car, Luke Bogacki in the
quarters, but fell himself to Hedgecock, while Fuqua threw up a
-.001 red light to Labbous. In Friday's final, Labbous earned
his second consecutive victory by picking up the win light over
Hedgecock, in another no-split final.
In Saturday's $20,000 race, presented by Jegs, Labbous once again
waded through the hyper-talented field, although it was his second
car that carried him the distance this time. Every match fell
his way, as he defeated Jeg Coughlin, Jr by .0008 to earn the by run
into the finals, where a shocked crowd witnessed former Million
Dollar Race winner Jeff Rucks hand Labbous a red light to solidify
an impossible third straight win -- again, in a no-split final.
That's right: John Labbous, Jr. not only won 24 rounds in a
row against 200 of the world's best bracket racers, but he also
pocketed a windfall $52,500!
 Saturday night, everyone enjoyed the Jim Harrington Memorial Racer's
Appreciation Barbeque, complete with the Anthony Bertozzi's famous
duct tape chicken, a DJ and karaoke (complete with a group singing
of Harrington's favorite, "Sweet Caroline"), and the raffle drawing
for the 2010 Race Tech Top Dragster. Three tickets were drawn,
with William Davis of Del Rio, Texas winning a DRE dragster cockpit
cover, William Bach of New Carlisle, Ohio winning $500 cash, and the
grand prize winner of the 2010 Race Tech 245" Swing Arm Top Dragster
was Ken Windley.
For
Sunday's Jegs $20,000 race, DragRaceResults.com posted a $500 bounty
on Labbous. The race was cut to an 1/8th mile course in the
interest of safety, due to the heavy overnight rain, which led to
difficulty in drying the full length of the track surface.
Jeff Strickland not only collected the bounty, but also went one
step further and actually defeated both of the Labbous entries.
At the end of the day, the semifinals were made up of Junior
Houston, Denver Maltba, and Brian Folk in on two entries. In
the finals, Houston captured the $20,000 payday over Folk in a
double-breakout affair, after both drivers left with double-oh
reaction times.
The McCarty Auto Parts King of the Mountain Shootout was pushed back
to Sunday due to Saturday night's weather. The winner of the
$500 entry, winner-take-all Dragster Shootout, Jason Lynch, topped
winner-take-all Door Car Shootout winner Luke Bogacki in the runoff
to earn the bonus expense-paid trip to Las Vegas.
